Barriers to Break

During my introductory journalism class, we were assigned a semester-long individual project based on developing research and information-gathering skills to produce a final website designed and created by us, individually. The topic needed to be related to the UW-Madison campus community and/or social justice issues as they affect university life in the United States. The process of this project included pitching our idea to our professors and TAs and in the end, developing a fully formed informative piece supported by multimedia elements. The topic I chose was the process of getting into college as an undocumented student. Welcome to Barriers to Break!

Project Name

Tasked with creating a smaller story with one interview source, we were asked to explore our topic and create a magazine layout story based on the insights we gained during the interview.

Final website

The end-goal of our individual projects was to create and design a website to feature our stories, resources, and the media made.

Timeline

As my second story form, I chose to create a timeline of DACA to help inform people on the background and updates at the time.

Listicle

As one of the first assignments for this project, the goal was to research our topic and organize our most interesting findings into a 10-item listicle.

Map

The project required two alternative story forms. I chose to create an interactive map to make it more accessible and easy for undocumented and DACAmented folks to find resources and safe spaces in Madison.

Interview story

As a final piece to my individual project, I was asked to create a three-page story weaving together documentary and interview sources based on my topic.
